We at Bubblin are fully stoked out to team up with RBMA to close 2013 with the hugely talented Machinedrum and a stellar local cast of support. His Vapor City Live A/V show, featuring Machinedrum on vocals, guitar, and electronics alongside a truly gifted live drummer, all set to beautiful visuals, has been garnering remarkable amounts of acclaim. We were bummed to miss him at Decibel Festival as everyone we came across told us it was the set of the festival, and word is the show has only become exponentially more amazing and fluid since then. With support from PDX’s ascendant star Natasha Kmeto and further representatives of crucial PDX crews Dropping Gems, Booty Bassment, PDneXt, All Ours, and Club Chemtrail, plus Bubblin Residents Lincolnup and Ben Tactic, all over two rooms, with Video and Lighting by Tracer Visuals, this evening promises to be hugely satisfying. It’s been a pretty great 2013 and we’ve been very fortunate to see appearances at Bubblin from luminaries such as Falty DL, Todd Edwards, DJ Pierre, Ben UFO, Bok Bok, L-Vis 1990, Om Unit, and many more, and we are deeply thankful to everyone who’s supported our events this year. ♥ THANK YOU ♥ We won’t be doing a NYE party, in lieu of this, so please do join us here to close out this wild year in fine style!

About Machinedrum
Born Travis Stewart on March 4th 1982, Machinedrum has produced and composed several albums under various aliases since his first independent release in 1999. Covering an astonishing variety of styles with ease, he has always been a trailblazer – bridging the gap between genres that would otherwise never have met before.

His debut Now You Know, was released in 2001 on the influential Miami-based Merck Records and gained worldwide attention and praise from musicians, fans and critics. It was heralded as the “standard to which the next wave of imitators aspires” by Pitchfork.com

Having a strong background in both acoustic and electronic instrumentation, he dances between those elements on all his releases. This can be heard inthe field recording and vintage synth laden Urban Biology to his seminal production and mixing of the This Charming Mixtape with MC Theophilus London and his critically acclaimed 2009 album Want To 1 2?

2010 saw Machinedum re-surface in a major way. His Many Faces EP on Glasgow-based label LuckyMe garnered attention from a brand new audience and opened the door for his very first performance at Sonar Festival. Simultaneously his newest side project Sepalcure, a duo with Praveen Sharma, became one of the intriguing names in the post-dubstep and UK funky scene. Two EPs, Love Pressure and Fleur, released on imprint Hotflush, has giventhe duo NYC ambassadorship for this UK-based genre. An additional EP release on Innovative Leisure and musical composition for the off-broadway musical Camp Wanatachi completed one of Machinedrum’s busiest years to date.

In the past year, Machinedrum has relocated to Berlin and maintained a steady flow of releases including the celebrated Alarmaa EP on LuckyMe and his very first releases on Planet Mu Records the Sacred Frequency EP which served as a teaser for the critically-acclaimed Room(s) LP immediately followed by Ecstasy Boom, a free gift to fans offered on the web, and a self-titled LP from Sepalcure that anchored the duo as true tastemakers of electronica. SXLND, Stewart’s latest release with LuckyMe, is once again redefining his sound and keeping fans, along with critics, guessing what is still in store. Hard to believe, but the best is yet to come.

A true electronic music Renaissance man, Machinedrum blends together current pop music standards and trends with his own extensive knowledge of experimental production techniques, delivering his quality signature on every thing he touches.

About Natasha Kmeto
Natasha Kmeto is a Portland-based singer and electronic producer who turns heads everywhere she goes. Armed with a taut dance floor sensibility and flutteringly sensuous voice, she exudes the kind of beauty that can only come from confidence. Her tracks are sleek and energetic affairs, straddling the line between dance, pop, and RnB, percussively intriguing compositions that slide easily into the ear but aren’t so easily forgotten. Her beauty, energy, and talent coalesce into a truly visceral live show, moving both to the partygoer and the thinking person alike. Wherever her music goes, heavy breathing will follow.

Born into a musical family in California, Natasha began to develop her talents as an artist from a young age. It wasn’t until almost two decades later, on the verge of becoming a career session musician, that she grabbed the wheel and broke out in a direction that truly inspired her. Her arrival in Portland marked a big step towards new things. The past several years as seen her growth quicken, especially after signing with hometown label Dropping Gems. The string of releases that have followed showcase Natasha in her most self-realized form, in matters of love, independence, and outlook on life.

Natasha has a long list of notable live performances under her belt, including gigs at Coachella, Bumbershoot, MusicFestNW, Symbiosis, SXSW, Low End Theory (LA and SF) and Decibel Festival. She has shared the stage with a number of talented artists as well, including Squarepusher, Emancipator, Kid Cudi, Plaid, Gold Panda, Dam Funk, Shlohmo, Shigeto, and Morcheeba, just to name a few. Her radio experience includes live performances on Boiler Room and KEXP, and her tracks have been played by numerous noteworthy DJs including Mary Anne Hobbes. She is due to release her LP ‘Crisis’ June 18th on Dropping Gems.

As L-Vis 1990, James Connolly has been releasing a singular brand of club music free of rules and genres since dropping his eponymous debut EP in 2008. Yes, we understand if you’re sceptical—everyone claims to be a rule-breaker these days. But try putting into words the music on his and Bok Bok’s inimitable Night Slugs label or any of his tracks and remixes over the past few years and it should quickly become apparent that L-Vis 1990 has been doing things just a little bit differently.

James grew up in Brighton, UK, where during his teenage years he began to DJ, produce and promote club nights. He co-founded the Fallout night, while picking up gigs across the city and experimenting with music production software. The booking of NYC producer Drop The Lime for another of his club nights, So Loud!, would prove to be an epiphanic moment, in that it reconnected James with a love for bass music, inspiring him to write his standout first release, the L-Vis 1990 EP.

As though setting in motion a domino effect, the track “Change The Game” from that release piqued the interest of Alex Sushon, AKA Bok Bok, who got in contact with James, thus beginning an enduring creative relationship that would indeed change the game. James relocated to London soon after, although the pair quickly concluded that the city’s music scene was, to quote Alex, “shit and we weren’t feeling it.” The by-product of their vexation was Night Slugs. The first party went down in March 2008 at Camberwell’s Redstar, and went on to take up primary residence at East Village (among many other raves at one-off venues) with guests like Oneman, Lil Silva, Geeneus, Christian Martin, Roska and Kode9 feeding into the night’s freewheeling attitude.

As Night Slugs began to properly establish itself, as did James as a producer. In 2009 Compass / Zahonda for Sound Pellegrino and the colossal United Groove for Mad Decent were supplemented by a slew of remixes for artists like Laidback Luke & Diplo, Riton & Primary 1 and Gucci Vump. Acting as a precursor for all that was to come the following year, James and Alex also dropped The Night Slugs EP through Glasgow imprint Dress 2 Sweat, introducing Alex’s now famed style of artwork and their common interest in eschewing any sort of formulas.

The energy and creativity surrounding the Night Slugs party had reached critical mass by the end of that year: at the start of 2010 the Night Slugs label was launched via Mosca’s Square One. By the time James had made his full NS debut with the anthemic Forever You in August, the imprint had put-out peerless music from Girl Unit, Egyptrixx, Lil Silva and Jam City, and was already being spoken of in terms of ‘label of the year’. A tumultuous first year was encapsulated on Night Slugs Allstars Volume One, while James and the extended NS family had successfully cultivated a vibe and an outlook that was entirely sui genius.

This considerable momentum spilled over into 2011—killer releases from Kingdom, Bok Bok, Pearson Sound and Jam City made sure of that. In the studio, meanwhile, James had begun to further explore the groove-based exploits outlined on “Forever You” and his remix of Gucci Vump, via re-rubs of Cassius and Round Table Knights. In fact, the real result of these endeavours could be thought of as a lifetime in the making as James released his debut album, Neon Dreams, through PMR Records. Using exclusively hardware (Roland’s 707 drum machine features on every track), James has crafted a deeply personal record that, through the voices of Javeon McCarthy and Samantha Lim, conveys the story of a year in his life. Neon Dreams brings 15 years’ worth of musical influences to bear, while shifting into focus the love of classic house music that has transcended all of James’s output to date.

Never one to let the dust settle 2012 see’s James dive further into the House music whirlpool, with an anthemic remix for dance legends Orbital and his first release for NIght Slugs since 2010′s ‘Forever You’. Club Constructions Vol.1 is part of a a new series of releases that will operate alongside Night Slugs’ main EPs and white label series, a home for their most direct productions, aimed straight for the dancefloor. With CC Vol.1 James draws on classic Dance Mania and Underground Construction vibes to deliver 5 tape-saturated, strictly-analog slices of modern-day ghetto hard house that have been supported by DJ’s across the world of house and techno. 2012 looks set to be the year that James and Night Slugs reaffirm their place at the forefront of progressive club music.

Bubblin and Northwest House Music Conference come together to bring you two certified legends of Garage and House Music on one extraordinary bill…

TODD EDWARDS
Todd Edwards made his PDX debut last November at (the sorely missed) Groove Suite, where he played a euphoric 4.5 hour set, sang ‘Face to Face’ live for the first time ever, and had the club levitating the whole while. Since then he has collaborated again with Daft Punk on their new LP ‘Random Access Memories’, was featured in DP’s The Collaborators series (alongside NIle Rodgers, Giorgio Moroder, and Pharrell), done an Essential Mix for BBC Radio 1, and played choice club and festival dates worldwide. TE’s patented style of hypnotically collaged/cut-up samples over swung beats and lively disco-flavored basslines has influenced seminal artists from Daft Punk to Burial to Joy Orbison and beyond.
Credited as one of the godfathers of UK garage, his pioneering flavor long ago earned him a passionate following in Europe. In addition to his own legendary productions, Edwards has also remixed Justice, Phoenix, Klaxons, Hot Chip, Spank Rock, Boris, Appaloosa, Surkin, Robin S, Zoot Woman, St. Germain, and Dimitri From Paris. Edwards also co-produced, co-wrote, and sang on the Daft Punk song ‘Face to Face’ on their 2001 album Discovery.

IAN POOLEY
With an immense discography that stretches back to 1993, Ian Pooley is one of Germany’s first generation of DJ’s and Producers. But instead of following the distinctly Teutonic sounds emanating from Berlin or Frankfurt, Pooley fell in love with the grooves of Chicago and Detroit. Along with DJ Tonka, Pooley pushed a sound that explored the spaces between house and techno and, as a solo artist, found enormous success – eventually leading to a major label deal with V2 that yielded classic House albums like ‘Meridian’ and ‘Since Then’. Still as vital as ever, recently he’s released a great new LP, ‘What I Do’, on his own label, Pooled Music, and stellar singles for labels the likes of Innervisions, Ovum, and Lazy Days.

Join us as Red Bull Music Academy & Soul’d Out Music Festival present the Bubblin 3 Year Anniversary. Since 2010, Bubblin has been one of North America’s definitive advocates for all sounds at the intersection of house, garage, techno and tropical bass. For the occasion we’re thrilled to present a line up of PDX debuts by two of the most incandescent talents to emerge in dance music in recent years: Hessle Audio Co-Boss and globally revered disk jockey Ben UFO and 100% Silk’s melodic deep house savant Octo Octa. We have also enlisted Fusebox’s glorious Funktion One rig and 3D projection mapped visuals by PDX’s Prism Labs to make sure the evening both sounds and looks beautiful.

ABOUT BEN UFO
http://www.residentadvisor.net/dj/benufo
http://rinse.fm/artists/hessleaudio/

As one of the co-founders of Hessle Audio, Ben UFO has been responsible, alongside Pearson Sound and Pangaea, for some of the most varied and ground breaking releases of recent years. Having become immersed in the still emerging dubstep scenes in London and Leeds in 2005, his musical taste was shaped primarily by the DMZ and Sub Dub nights taking place in those cities. However, as tastes have shifted and scenes have fragmented, Ben UFO’s approach to the music and to Hessle Audio itself has developed.

As BPMs have dropped and influences have broadened, so too has the vision of Ben UFO’s DJing. He remains one of the few DJs in the UK to have made an impact without a production career to fall back on, and as such his reputation is solely the result of his skill as a selector and as a mixer. As a result he remains in a position to fully explore sounds both old and new, across the worlds of house and garage, dubstep and grime, and further into the past. This level of commitment to the dance music of the last two decades has led to a collection of records which reflects the position London has long held as a city responsible for the constant development of forward thinking music.

This is not to say that his focus is primarily on the sounds of the old school, as Ben UFO is looked to as one of the leading figures supporting up and coming producers. He was the first DJ to play material by producers such as Blawan and Joy Orbison, both now scene figureheads, and his biweekly slot on London’s leading ex-pirate radio station, RinseFM, is considered to be one of the only places to hear the most exclusive new music by both new and established producers.

In addition to well received podcasts in magazines and websites as varied as Resident Advisor, XLR8R, Red Bull Music Academy and Fact Magazine, 2011 was the year that Ben UFO entered the world of commercially released mix CDs. His contribution to the respected RinseFM series was widely praised for its coherence despite the breadth of styles showcased, and he was placed #35 in a Resident Advisor readers’ poll to find the years best DJ. It’s a result which reflects Ben UFO’s ability to successfully present unfamiliar, experimental dance music to a diverse variety of audiences worldwide.

Ben UFO plays from 9PM – 11PM on RinseFM (www.rinse.fm / 106.8FM in London) every Thursday night.

ABOUT OCTO OCTA
https://www.facebook.com/pages/Octo-Octa/311612715552997?

Octo Octa is Michael Bouldry-Morrison, a Brooklyn-based house music producer. Following the release of his debut EP “Let Me See You” on 100% Silk in 2011 – a release described by label head Amanda Brown (LA Vampires) as “literally one of the favorite songs ever released on either of my record labels” – he went on to produce three further releases for the label: ʻRough, Rugged, and Raw,ʼ ʻOh Love,ʼ and an eventual collaboration with Amanda Brown, the ʻLA Vampires by Octo Octaʼ release “Freedom 2K.” His singular brand of R&B-sampling deep and emotional house music has propelled him to the forefront of a scene of house-not-house producers garnering widespread critical acclaim in both traditional electronic music and indie-minded musical circles. Having recently been selected as a participant for the 2013 Red Bull Music Academy, a European tour scheduled for late 2012, and both a new EP and LP in the works, Octo Octaʼs ascent is imminent.

About Bok Bok
Bok Bok aka Alex Sushon is a London based DJ, producer, remixer and director of the incendiary Night Slugs record label.
DJing since 2004, Sushon started to make his name on London’s underground scene around the time Grime music was first emerging from the capitol’s tower blocks, and for the first years of his career he played little else. The unique inventiveness and raw energy of that music has remained with Sushon ever since those early days, as he discovered the wider world of club music, seeing many parallels between the homegrown music of London and House music from Chicago to South Africa, Techno, Baltimore/Jersey/Philly Club, 80s funk and a myriad other music styles across many eras. For Sushon, all these musics came together to form a seamless timeline, all complimenting, echoging and supplementing each other.
This pan-genre, time-irreverent mentality was the foundation of the Night Slugs movement. In 2008 Sushon would join forces with like-minded producer and DJ L-Vis 1990 to form Night Slugs (NS), initially a club night in South London. From day 1 the ethos was fiercely open-minded and DIY, as Bok and L-Vis dedicated themselves to club music. Through the events series and their DJ sets around the UK and Europe, the duo cultivated a unique sound, cross-polynating ideas from their various influences until a distinct community of producers crystalised around them.
In 2010 Night Slugs re-launched as a record label. Since then NS has been a non-stop source of cutting-edge, challenging and ambitious music for the club, launching the careers of artists such as Mosca, Jam City and Girl Unit and providing a context-rich platform for like-minded producers such as Kingdom, Egyptrixx and Lil Silva. The label’s sound may be diverse but it’s FEEL is distinctive, injecting its myriad influences back into the UK soundsystem heritage that inspired Sushon way back in his early days as a Grime DJ. In the process, Night Slugs has become a truly cult label, with a reputation for quality and innovation rivaled by few others and with a fan base as globally spread as Bok and L-Vis’ inspirations.
Sushon plays a key curatorial role in the Night Slugs project, undertaking everything from the label’s music and art-direction to engineering and mixing releases.
In 2009, Bok Bok & L-Vis 1990 joined London’s leading underground radio station Rinse FM – then a pirate. Rinse has since gained a broadcasting license and remains a cornerstone of London’s music scene. Catch the Night Slugs Mix Show on Rinse every 4th Sunday of the month, 11pm-1am GMT on 106.8FM around London and Rinse.FM elsewhere.

About Falty DL:

Welcome if you will, to the coming of age of FaltyDL, AKA Drew Lustman. A producer who’s already carved out a name as one of the most exciting talents to emerge in electronic music of late, he’s released albums on Planet Mu, supported Radiohead (and topped Thom Yorke’s office playlist,) as well as remixed the XX, Scuba and Mount Kimbie – to name but a few. He also has his own label, Blueberry Records, in collaboration with which Ninja Tune presents ‘Hardcourage.’

‘Hardcourage’ is the NYC-based Lustman’s masterpiece: an electronic opus inspired by love and crafted with renewed intent and dedication. Lustman often makes mention of attempting to channel the music in his head, to allow it to pour forth direct from his subconscious. In ‘Hardcourage’ it seems he’s succeeded. The music here feels incredibly natural, the songs taking the most perfect of shapes, their emotive rise and swell both subtle and immensely powerful.

Halfway through making the album, Lustman fell in love – the object of his affections rapidly becoming his muse. He’s been very lucky in more ways than one: ‘Hardcourage’ is full of uplift, energy and purpose – it genuinely feels like all the best parts of falling in love.

The album’s opener ‘Stay, I’m Changed’ is much more than just a track that happens to come first; it genuinely opens the album, setting the tone and enticing the listener in to the self-contained world within. From its initially tentative, horn-like synths, it gradually grows in urgency, drama and emotional depth.

Second single ‘She Sleeps’ is the only vocal track on the album, featuring a brilliant, haunting turn from The Friendly Fires’ Ed Macfarlane. The pair bonded over a shared love for garage music, (ironically, garage being the sound Falty has moved away from on the album.) The collaboration feels instinctive and inspired, two minds meeting to make a song with a purity and vulnerability not often found in electronic music.

‘Finally Some Shit/ The Rain Stopped’ feels like the blues lifting. Its pattering drums bring to mind rain against a windowpane, the driving bassline is like renewed resolve captured in music. ‘Hardcourage’ is about ‘when things are in Limbo and having the courage to carry on,’ says Lustman, and nowhere is that more in evidence than here.

The album’s first single ‘Straight and Arrow’ summarises the musical direction Lustman has taken with ‘Hardcourage.’ His move away from a US take on garage has resulted in a masterful brand of atmospheric, soul-drenched house and electronica. As you’d expect, Falty has applied as much vision to the album’s close as he has its beginning. ‘Bells’ has a strong claim to be electronica’s greatest love song. Like the clouds parting, the heart leaping, the world seeming to chime with happiness, it’s the perfect end to the perfect declaration of love.

‘I didn’t make this album with the intent of sharing all of it,’ Lustman has said. That’s obviously served him well. Luckily for us, share it he has.
