About Ben UFO
As one of the co-founders of Hessle Audio, Ben UFO has been responsible, alongside Pearson Sound and Pangaea, for some of the most varied and ground breaking releases of recent years. Having become immersed in the still emerging dubstep scenes in London and Leeds in 2005, his musical taste was shaped primarily by the DMZ and Sub Dub nights taking place in those cities. However, as tastes have shifted and scenes have fragmented, Ben UFO’s approach to the music and to Hessle Audio itself has developed.

As BPMs have dropped and influences have broadened, so too has the vision of Ben UFO’s DJing. He remains one of the few DJs in the UK to have made an impact without a production career to fall back on, and as such his reputation is solely the result of his skill as a selector and as a mixer. As a result he remains in a position to fully explore sounds both old and new, across the worlds of house and garage, dubstep and grime, and further into the past. This level of commitment to the dance music of the last two decades has led to a collection of records which reflects the position London has long held as a city responsible for the constant development of forward thinking music.

This is not to say that his focus is primarily on the sounds of the old school, as Ben UFO is looked to as one of the leading figures supporting up and coming producers. He was the first DJ to play material by producers such as Blawan and Joy Orbison, both now scene figureheads, and his biweekly slot on London’s leading ex-pirate radio station, RinseFM, is considered to be one of the only places to hear the most exclusive new music by both new and established producers.

In addition to well received podcasts in magazines and websites as varied as Resident Advisor, XLR8R, Red Bull Music Academy and Fact Magazine, 2011 was the year that Ben UFO entered the world of commercially released mix CDs. His contribution to the respected RinseFM series was widely praised for its coherence despite the breadth of styles showcased, and he was placed #35 in a Resident Advisor readers’ poll to find the years best DJ. It’s a result which reflects Ben UFO’s ability to successfully present unfamiliar, experimental dance music to a diverse variety of audiences worldwide.

Ben UFO plays from 11pm – 1am on RinseFM (www.rinse.fm / 106.8FM in London) on the first and third Thursday of each month.

Somehow it’s already been a two year run of Bubblin monthlies! From it’s first event in April 2010 with the West Coast debut of UK Funky pioneer Roska, Bubblin has seen a great run of singular bookings and dance parties. We’ve been honored to host many memorable events that saw the Pac NW debuts of trailblazing artists such as Pearson Sound/Ramadanman, Dave Nada, Kyle Hall, Zed Bias, Nguzunguzu, LOL Boys, Distal, Dubble Dutch, Dre Skull, and numerous others. It’s been really awesome! We’re so thankful to have a pasionate core of amazing people that have been so support both at shows and online.

For our two year celebration we’re thrilled to be bringing HxdB back to PDX, who laid down one of the very finest sets we’ve ever heard at a Bubblin in July 2011. HxdB is unquestionably at the forefront of mutant garage/house sounds in the Pac NW, with a huge new release alongside fellow Bubblin alum Distal on iconic UK label Tectonic that is currently blazing up the charts. He always comes well equipped with a slew of unreleased dubs to fuel his impeccable and unfailing DJ taste and timing. We can’t wait to hear what he’s got in store for us!

PDX superbadmen Danny Corn and Barisone will be on hand as well, providing stellar local support along with your faithful Bubblin residents Ben Tactic and Lincolnup.

-> For over 17 years, Danny Corn has been on the vanguard of electronic music, leaving the trends to other people. As a DJ, he is known as an instrumental player in the formation of the “west coast” sound and over the years has traveled extensively and played with just about everybody who has made moves in the scene. A champion of syncopated, bass heavy music, Danny Corn rides the edge of experimental sounds, whilst staying firmly committed to the dancefloor. A recent move to Portland, OR has found Danny Corn taking time to channel all of his experience into music production. His current sets are a eclectic mix of originals, exclusives and personal favorites.

-> Barisone is without a doubt one of PDX’s best loved DJ’s. His magnanimous presence and penchant for putting the dancefloor into sublime outer spaces is well known. With versatile crates that seamlessly span the upfront to the time tested, Barisone comes with dj sets filled with his own loops, layers, and edits that always set the party off.

* This will be the final installment of Bubblin’s monthly residence parties. Fret not however, we’ll still be doing one off events to ensure that PDX can get it’s proper fix of upfront house, garage, and tropical bass, beginning with highly regarded DJ and Hessle Audio co-operator Ben UFO (London, UK) at Groove Suite on Sunday, May 20, 2012.

SPEKT 1, helmsman of BLAST Fridays at Crown Room, one of a few heads in town featuring and booking Bubblin style sounds. Responsible for Clicks & Whistles’ PDX debut. Giving folks an alternative to having their faces melted and keeping SUBTLE DYNAMICS alive on PDX dancefloors.

And your dudes LINCOLNUP and BEN TACTIC doing what they do, keeping it upfront whilst taking care of that back.

For Bubblin XXI we welcome distinguished and esteemed PDX selectors Dave Quam, Roane, Jusayn, and Dhug into the mix.

Dave Quam is a writer, photographer, producer, and DJ whose work has appeared in XLR8R, The Wire, DJ Magazine, and Shook to name a few. His blog, It’s After the End of the World, is one of the seminal portals into the kaleidoscopic regional/global bass sounds of yesterday and today. He’s recently relocated back to his hometown of Portland from Chicago, where he extensively documented and participated in the Windy City’s vibrant Juke/Footwork scene – the latest sounds out of Chicago that are currently reverberating on dancefloors round the world. His crates are as deep and varied as any to be found in the global bass continuum. We’re stoked to have him come though and light up the Bubblin set!

Roane and Jusayn both rep Portland’s eclectic, freewheeling collective Grand Cooley with commendable aplomb. After witnessing their excellent and rousing B2B set at a wild house party late this past summer, they went onto our short list of locals to put on. Vinyl purists both, their crates are stocked with irreproachable house and boogie tracks plus a shockingly deep selection of super choice freestyle cuts. Trust these fellows are gonna nice up the dance properly!
http://grandcooley.com/

Dhug, of the madcap Chickenhed crew, first heard Moombahton at Dave Nada’s rowdy December 2010 PDX debut at Bubblin and was fully smitten by the sound. A year later, we’re pumped to have him coming through to lace us with a smoothed out moombah set to get Bubblin XXI started.

We at Bubblin are fully stoked out to announce our first dance party at our new home, Rotture! We’ve loved our time at Crown Room with its massive sound and awesome staff, but are thrilled to be hopping across the Willamette to Rotture’s friendly and spacious Inner Eastside confines.

For the occasion we’ve enlisted two of the finest dancefloor fillers around: Brookyln via Miami bass bomber extraordinaire JUBILEE and Pacific Northwest juke/bass sensation CEDAA! We’ve had Jubilee on our radar to bring out since first commencing Bubblin and are honored to now host her PDX debut. She brings impeccable selections, air tight phrased up mixes, and tru skool rave love to her vibrant dj sets – get ready to work it out PDX. Pac NW upstart Cedaa made his PDX debut at the Bubblin 1 Yr in April, when he was still too young to order a drink in the club! Now, having just turned 21 in late August, he’s back to set things off in his fresh and unique style.

Check dope mixes, tracks, and remixes from each of them:

Re: JUBILEE
Though now splitting her time between Miami and Brooklyn, XLR8R’s “artist to watch” Jubilee will always be Brooklyn’s bass sweetheart. Known for her rambunctious combination of upfront bass music, UK house, and tropical flavors, she has become a surefire remedy for ailing dancefloors around the globe.

Co-opting her name from the X-Men character who shot fireworks out of her hands, Jubilee works similar magic when she steps into the DJ booth. But she’s also simply Jess, the one-time South Florida raver who grew up obsessively listening to Miami bass on the radio and dancing the night away at underground breaks parties. After making the move to NYC, she quickly infiltrated the DJ circuit and began turning heads with her knowledge of all things bass.

It’s the sweet mix of underground bass and tropical vibes that brings Jubilee from clubs and warehouse parties to the comfort of your own home. Her radio show Fireworks, on both Brooklyn Radio and Electric Soundstage (iHeartRadio’s new electronic station), continuously features fellow global producers such as Sinden, Bok Bok, Mike Q, and Star Eyes. Prior to Fireworks, she has DJed on East Village Radio and put together well received guest mixes for “The Mix Up” on Australia’s Triple J Radio and XLR8R Magazine’s esteemed podcast series.

You can also find Jubilee on the production end of things as one half of Bassanovva, a project with Canadian producer Grahmzilla (previously of Thunderheist). The duo’s debut EP, Chicken Lover, dropped this past November on Sinden’s Grizzly label. Be sure to also check out her Paypur EP with Udachi for the Nightshifters label, an imprint she runs with Jason Forrest (a.k.a. Dj Donna Summer). These days we have also seen official Jubilee remixes for some of the most buzzed about artists- Cubic Zirconia (with Proper Villians), Canblaster, and Creep (with Star Eyes).

As if that’s not enough, Jubilee also puts on the infamous Flashing Lights party (with Nick Catchdubs and DJ Ayres); named Best New Party at the Paper Magazine 2010 Nightlife Awards. Critical recognition is no stranger to Jess- in 2009, Sasha Frere-Jones invited her to perform at the New Yorker Festival—she was the only DJ on the bill. Jubilee regularly DJs throughout the US and Europe, and you will be sure to see a lot more of her bass-loaded fireworks on both sides of the Atlantic.

Re: Cedaa
This Pacific NW Juke/Bass wunderkind is one of a handful of producers in North America making waves in both the Chicago Juke and UK Bass scenes. Young Cedaa just celebrated his 21st birthday at the end of August down in SF opening up for Addison Groove at the renowned monthly ICEE HOT. Here’s what noted bass connoisseur Dave Quam had to say about our guy:
“Cedaa has been brought to the attention of some due to support from Girl Unit, Canblaster, Blackdown, and other European DJs with a knack for digging through Soundcloud. Under two decades old, this Washington-based producer can’t even get into the club yet, and you can tell by his tracks that his aim isn’t just to make people dress up and go out…. A Chicago sound palette plays an obvious role in the creation of this music, but I’ve yet to find another “outsider” American make a better nod towards the Windy City, while simultaneously coming up with something as fresh as this. It’s Bellingham Bounce from here on out, and Cedaa is the reigning (raining?) ruler of the top-left coast.”

KABOOOOM!

Re: Bubblin
Founded by residents Lincolnup and Ben Tactic, Bubblin puts on dance parties in Portland, OR. The two veteran DJs met in late 2009 at a Gant Man show and bonded over their shared love of music emerging from the funky – house – garage – tropical – postdubstep continuum. From there they decided to establish Bubblin, becoming the Pacific Northwest’s first advocates devoted to these forward thinking sounds. Since then Bubblin has consistentlyfeatured debut Pacific Northwest performances by ahead of the curve artists, such as Roska, Ghosts on Tape, Zed Bias aka Maddslinky, Dubbel Dutch, Distal, Kyle Hall, Nguzunguzu, LOL Boys, Dave Nada, Ramadanman aka Pearson Sound, Dre Skull, and Jimmy Edgar. Bubblin is dedicated to bringing up to the time and timeless dance music to the good people of Portland, OR and beyond.
