DJ PIERRE YALL! The man who was instrumental in defining the sound that launched the rave movement worldwide: ACID HOUSE. With his group, Phuture, in 1986 he released the seminal ‘Acid Tracks’, widely acknowledged as the first ever acid house tune, and a phenomenon was born that is still powerfully reverberating throughout electronic dance culture to this day. He has gone on to produce many more seminal acid, deep, and funky house classics on bedrock labels such as Trax, Strictly Rhythm, Dance Mania, Hot Mix 5 Records, Jack Trax, and more. His discography is a fundamental part of the House Music Canon. Behind the decks, Pierre is a deeply funky Chicago badman who can turn a 21st century dance floor all the way out, as well evidenced by his blinding set on Boiler Room from last August. Trust this will be a phenomenal set from a legend who traces his roots to the beginnings of House Music. Bubblin fam, get ready to jack.

As one of the co-founders of Hessle Audio, Ben UFO has been responsible, alongside Pearson Sound and Pangaea, for some of the most varied and ground breaking releases of recent years. Having become immersed in the still emerging dubstep scenes in London and Leeds in 2005, his musical taste was shaped primarily by the DMZ and Sub Dub nights taking place in those cities. However, as tastes have shifted and scenes have fragmented, Ben UFO’s approach to the music and to Hessle Audio itself has developed.

As BPMs have dropped and influences have broadened, so too has the vision of Ben UFO’s DJing. He remains one of the few DJs in the UK to have made an impact without a production career to fall back on, and as such his reputation is solely the result of his skill as a selector and as a mixer. As a result he remains in a position to fully explore sounds both old and new, across the worlds of house and garage, dubstep and grime, and further into the past. This level of commitment to the dance music of the last two decades has led to a collection of records which reflects the position London has long held as a city responsible for the constant development of forward thinking music.

This is not to say that his focus is primarily on the sounds of the old school, as Ben UFO is looked to as one of the leading figures supporting up and coming producers. He was the first DJ to play material by producers such as Blawan and Joy Orbison, both now scene figureheads, and his biweekly slot on London’s leading ex-pirate radio station, RinseFM, is considered to be one of the only places to hear the most exclusive new music by both new and established producers.

In addition to well received podcasts in magazines and websites as varied as Resident Advisor, XLR8R, Red Bull Music Academy and Fact Magazine, 2011 was the year that Ben UFO entered the world of commercially released mix CDs. His contribution to the respected RinseFM series was widely praised for its coherence despite the breadth of styles showcased, and he was placed #35 in a Resident Advisor readers’ poll to find the years best DJ. It’s a result which reflects Ben UFO’s ability to successfully present unfamiliar, experimental dance music to a diverse variety of audiences worldwide.

Octo Octa is Michael Bouldry-Morrison, a Brooklyn-based house music producer. Following the release of his debut EP “Let Me See You” on 100% Silk in 2011 – a release described by label head Amanda Brown (LA Vampires) as “literally one of the favorite songs ever released on either of my record labels” – he went on to produce three further releases for the label: ʻRough, Rugged, and Raw,ʼ ʻOh Love,ʼ and an eventual collaboration with Amanda Brown, the ʻLA Vampires by Octo Octaʼ release “Freedom 2K.” His singular brand of R&B-sampling deep and emotional house music has propelled him to the forefront of a scene of house-not-house producers garnering widespread critical acclaim in both traditional electronic music and indie-minded musical circles. Having recently been selected as a participant for the 2013 Red Bull Music Academy, a European tour scheduled for late 2012, and both a new EP and LP in the works, Octo Octaʼs ascent is imminent.

ABOUT FLUME
Flume is a very young Sydney beat maker who’s grabbed the attention of XLR8R, Electronic Beats, Triple J, FBi and many more in less than a year.

Flume got his first taste for producing at age 13 (!) from the most unlikely of places – a music production program he found in a cereal box. It began Flume’s obsession with all things synthetic, and started his addiction for plug-ins, sample packs & vintage analogue hardware.

‘Sleepless’ was Flume’s debut EP and packed enough lush pads, chopped and chipmunked vocals, saw synths and intricate percussion to impress any fan of Hudson Mohawke, Flying Lotus, Seekae or Space Dimension Controller.

It was described by XLR8R as “a solid piece of soulful beat work.” picking up a 8.6 and nabbing their 2nd most downloaded track in August 2011. It impressed dance music website Electronic Beats so much they said “we reckon this young Australian is going to make waves” while cult German magazine Lodown described it as “the perfect pop record for anyone who’d never even look at what’s going down in the official charts” sealing it with a huge 8/10. Locally in Australia Triple J Morning Host Zan Rowe named it as her Catch of The Day” describing it as “Cut up, warm, rolling, thuddy, wonderful…”.

Shortly after the ‘Sleepless’ EP Flume put his ears and fingers into New Navy’s huge summer anthem ‘Zimbabwe’. The remix was debuted on the Australian hipster bible Pedestrian.tv and recently picked up a NSFW video clip of teenage adventures picking up late night plays on Australian TV show Rage. The month after his New Navy remix came out triple j picked him as their February Mix Up Exclusives Resident – think of it as Australia’s version of the BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix for a month!

Flume’s live show is now coming into full effect after selling out 2 national Australian tours and by the end of 2012 Flume would of played prestigious Australian festivals Splendour in the Grass, Parklife and Foreshore as well as a very special event in Sydney called Vivid LIVE at Sydney’s most famous venue The Sydney Opera House.

He’s still more busy than ever producing – recently releasing an original with Anna Lunoe called ‘I Met You’, remixes for Hermitude (Elefant Tracks), The Aston Shuffle and Ta-ku as well as putting the finishing touches on his debut album.

About Bok Bok
Bok Bok aka Alex Sushon is a London based DJ, producer, remixer and director of the incendiary Night Slugs record label.
DJing since 2004, Sushon started to make his name on London’s underground scene around the time Grime music was first emerging from the capitol’s tower blocks, and for the first years of his career he played little else. The unique inventiveness and raw energy of that music has remained with Sushon ever since those early days, as he discovered the wider world of club music, seeing many parallels between the homegrown music of London and House music from Chicago to South Africa, Techno, Baltimore/Jersey/Philly Club, 80s funk and a myriad other music styles across many eras. For Sushon, all these musics came together to form a seamless timeline, all complimenting, echoging and supplementing each other.
This pan-genre, time-irreverent mentality was the foundation of the Night Slugs movement. In 2008 Sushon would join forces with like-minded producer and DJ L-Vis 1990 to form Night Slugs (NS), initially a club night in South London. From day 1 the ethos was fiercely open-minded and DIY, as Bok and L-Vis dedicated themselves to club music. Through the events series and their DJ sets around the UK and Europe, the duo cultivated a unique sound, cross-polynating ideas from their various influences until a distinct community of producers crystalised around them.
In 2010 Night Slugs re-launched as a record label. Since then NS has been a non-stop source of cutting-edge, challenging and ambitious music for the club, launching the careers of artists such as Mosca, Jam City and Girl Unit and providing a context-rich platform for like-minded producers such as Kingdom, Egyptrixx and Lil Silva. The label’s sound may be diverse but it’s FEEL is distinctive, injecting its myriad influences back into the UK soundsystem heritage that inspired Sushon way back in his early days as a Grime DJ. In the process, Night Slugs has become a truly cult label, with a reputation for quality and innovation rivaled by few others and with a fan base as globally spread as Bok and L-Vis’ inspirations.
Sushon plays a key curatorial role in the Night Slugs project, undertaking everything from the label’s music and art-direction to engineering and mixing releases.
In 2009, Bok Bok & L-Vis 1990 joined London’s leading underground radio station Rinse FM – then a pirate. Rinse has since gained a broadcasting license and remains a cornerstone of London’s music scene. About Falty DL:

Welcome if you will, to the coming of age of FaltyDL, AKA Drew Lustman. A producer who’s already carved out a name as one of the most exciting talents to emerge in electronic music of late, he’s released albums on Planet Mu, supported Radiohead (and topped Thom Yorke’s office playlist,) as well as remixed the XX, Scuba and Mount Kimbie – to name but a few. He also has his own label, Blueberry Records, in collaboration with which Ninja Tune presents ‘Hardcourage.’

‘Hardcourage’ is the NYC-based Lustman’s masterpiece: an electronic opus inspired by love and crafted with renewed intent and dedication. Lustman often makes mention of attempting to channel the music in his head, to allow it to pour forth direct from his subconscious. In ‘Hardcourage’ it seems he’s succeeded. The music here feels incredibly natural, the songs taking the most perfect of shapes, their emotive rise and swell both subtle and immensely powerful.

Halfway through making the album, Lustman fell in love – the object of his affections rapidly becoming his muse. He’s been very lucky in more ways than one: ‘Hardcourage’ is full of uplift, energy and purpose – it genuinely feels like all the best parts of falling in love.

The album’s opener ‘Stay, I’m Changed’ is much more than just a track that happens to come first; it genuinely opens the album, setting the tone and enticing the listener in to the self-contained world within. From its initially tentative, horn-like synths, it gradually grows in urgency, drama and emotional depth.

Second single ‘She Sleeps’ is the only vocal track on the album, featuring a brilliant, haunting turn from The Friendly Fires’ Ed Macfarlane. The pair bonded over a shared love for garage music, (ironically, garage being the sound Falty has moved away from on the album.) The collaboration feels instinctive and inspired, two minds meeting to make a song with a purity and vulnerability not often found in electronic music.

‘Finally Some Shit/ The Rain Stopped’ feels like the blues lifting. Its pattering drums bring to mind rain against a windowpane, the driving bassline is like renewed resolve captured in music. ‘Hardcourage’ is about ‘when things are in Limbo and having the courage to carry on,’ says Lustman, and nowhere is that more in evidence than here.

The album’s first single ‘Straight and Arrow’ summarises the musical direction Lustman has taken with ‘Hardcourage.’ His move away from a US take on garage has resulted in a masterful brand of atmospheric, soul-drenched house and electronica. As you’d expect, Falty has applied as much vision to the album’s close as he has its beginning. ‘Bells’ has a strong claim to be electronica’s greatest love song. Like the clouds parting, the heart leaping, the world seeming to chime with happiness, it’s the perfect end to the perfect declaration of love.

‘I didn’t make this album with the intent of sharing all of it,’ Lustman has said. That’s obviously served him well. Luckily for us, share it he has.

Kadeejah Streets is many things: dark and gritty music, cheese steaks, French electro circa ’00, the magic hour of 3 am, infinite amounts of lasagna, Black Sabbath circa ’72, apocalypse, 1ups, East Coast rap ’89-’94, electro air guitar, baby blue pimp suit’s, sock feet dancing to Duran Duran, etc… Together in a venue or after hours environment with big sound + turntables and you get what is known as Kadeejah Streets or KDJ. Kadeejah has shared the decks with DJ Garth, Hipp-E, A Touch of Class, MSTRKRFT, Army of One, Guns n Bombs and many others. He is also co-founder of Innerflight Music and is known for bringing a sound best described as electro-tech-Tejano meets rave-y dance punk in a dark, dirty, sweat-on-the-walls underground location.

J-SUN

J-Sun (Jason Zucker) is one of the ringleaders of the Seattle electronic scene and has been involved in creating music as well as the community here for almost fifteen years. He is the founder of record label/DJ crew/party-makers Innerflight Music and as such has been responsible for the production of a ridiculous number of electronic events and the many smiles that accompany them.

As a DJ, J-Sun has accumulated a loyal following, enamored with his exuberant energy, deep crates, and heady get-down style. ABOUT GHOSTS ON TAPE
Ghosts on Tape likes raving. Mind you, not the glowstick-powered, trance-laden nonsense that masquerades as raving these days. The San Francisco resident wants the real thing: dark warehouses, big soundsystems, sweaty walls and even sweatier bodies, and the pulsing sounds of gritty house and techno.

It’s those kinds of sounds that Ghosts on Tape (a.k.a. Ryan Merry) assembles on his dual Yamaha SU700 samplers. Although the ’90s-era machines are undeniably antiquated—new sounds literally have be loaded on the fly via floppy disk—he’s thoroughly mastered these vintage weapons, crafting raw and trippy tunes that combine the ominous underbelly of classic house and techno with upfront, bass-heavy futurism. Those sonic principles also drive ICEE HOT, the influential monthly party (and newly formed record label) in San Francisco which Ghosts on Tape co-founded and where he continues to serve as a resident DJ.

A native of St. Louis, Ghosts on Tape relocated to San Francisco in 2003 and began garnering attention for his blistering DJ and live sets and the warped, slow-motion house and bass sounds he was creating. His 2009 Predator Mode EP on Wireblock exploded Ghosts on Tape’s profile even further, as did an exclusive mix for Mary Anne Hobbs’ BBC Radio 1 show, as well as compilation appearances and remixes for labels such as Planet Mu, Tigerbeat6, Frite Nite, Shockout, True Panther, Friends Of Friends, and Opit, among others. In 2011, he was selected to be a participant at the Red Bull Music Academy in Madrid. His sound has evolved over the years, gradually pushing up the tempo back towards his Midwestern house and techno roots, but one thing hasn’t changed: Ghosts on Tape likes raving.

ABOUT RECESS
Recess has been in a long term love affair with Seattle’s underground music scene for the past couple of decades. In the late 80′s he found his second home at the long defunct Club Underground in Seattle’s University District (along with DJ Dominator aka Donald Glaude, DJ Dan and many others). During the 90s he bounced between raves, rock shows and jazz clubs appreciating the passion and community behind the scenes. Using these early experiences as a platform, he started collecting records and honing his skills at various clubs around the Northwest; quickly establishing himself as a formidable performer.

In 2003 he founded Shameless Productions (responsible for numerous legendary underground club nights, parties and shenanigans). Along with a changing cast of players, over the years, Shameless established itself as a trust worthy brand by throwing some of the most memorable events for Seattle’s undergound dance music community. From day one, each Shameless party was a special one regardless of the wide ranges of genres and bookings represented. With an eye towards the cutting edge, but deep respect for electronic music’s rich history, Shameless has kept it’s finger on the pulse of Seattle’s underground for close to ten years. In 2006 Recess was nominated as one of Seattle Weekly’s best local DJs. His DJ sets often reflect Shameless’ aesthetic by focusing on forward thinking music while cherishing the gems of the past. He’ll span the various sub genres of house/disco music, and may weave through techno, bass and funky depending upon the party. He’s also been known to throw down a rump shaking ghettotech/booty house set at times. As an example of his range, over the years he has rocked parties with Green Velvet, Egyptian Lover, Modeselektor, Claude Von Stroke, DJ Assault, Boys Noize, MSTRKRFT, Damian Lazarus, Smash TV, Drop the Lime, John Tejada and countless others across numerous electronic music genres. His range, passion and deep understanding of the dancefloor has made him a longtime favorite underground club DJ in Seattle and the greater Northwest. Whether it’s an afterhours loft space, major club, mountaintop, or random BASSment; Recess has consistently brought the sounds and energy to fit any dance party.
