Dj Zhao – Ngoma 6 – Ukulwa

Posted in Kwaito, mix, South Africa on June 16, 2010 by bentactic

Berlin’s Dj Zhao has dropped the 6th chapter of his Ngoma series of mixes. All of these mixes have been excellent and exposed me to a bunch of producers I wasn’t familiar with.  All the Ngoma mixes are very heavy on the global music tip and this one really bangs with a bunch of African & South African House.

Kwaito & South African House Music

Posted in Kwaito, South Africa on May 25, 2010 by bentactic

With the current trends in dance music, especially the sounds we here at Bubblin’ are feeling, South African house definitely needs some more shine.  The best known track internationally from this genre has been Dj Mujava’s ‘Township Funk‘. It was an undeniable global anthem with a ton of great remixes.  Dj Cleo is another major name in the South African scene, and one of my personal favorites.

It seemed for a moment that South African house or Kwaito as it is also known was going to be the next big thing globally but that never really materialized.   I have heard that there is a lack of high-speed internet in South Africa and in preparation for the World Cup this summer a huge fiber optic pipeline is being run which will open up more of the country to fast, dependable internet access. Given how integral the internet is in disseminating music today, hopefully this will help spread the sound even more. Plus, the World Cup is going to put a HUGE spotlight on South Africa in general, and hopefully Kwaito will benefit from it.

Dj Mujava recently released a great compilation called Ayobaness! The Sound of South African House. It is a great primer on this style of music.

About Ryan Organ

A heavy player in the Portland scene, Ryan Organ has been deejaying and promoting since the age of 16. His versatile sets combining oldschool jungle, garage, 4/4 and dubstep have taken him all over the United States.   During that time he has performed alongside heavy hitters such as Shy FX, Skream, Dj Krush, Rusko, Pendulum and many more.

In late 2006 Ryan and Monkeytek established a new event called Various, a monthly party rooted in soundsystem culture that showcased all types of bass driven music.  Various has become nationally known as one of the finest events of its kind, hosting local, national and international talent of highest caliber.  Now into its fourth year, Various shows no signs of slowing down, always bringing the heavy bass and thick vibes it is known for.

In addition to building a stellar reputation as a dj and promoter, Ryan is also heavily involved with two of the US’s most forward thinking record labels, Offshore Recordings and LoDubs.  As co-manager of Offshore Recordings, Ryan has helped to release some of the finest leftfield DnB in recent memory.  With LoDubs, he juggles the roles of design, logistics and publicity, all contributing to what has become one of North America’s finest dubstep labels.   By day, Ryan can be found at Anthem Records (LoDubs HQ) as the jungle and dubstep buyer.

Bubblin has tabbed Ryan to select and mix Bubblin Vol. 2 Mix CD, which will be released at the May 14 Bubblin, free CD copies to the first 20 folks arriving.

Sergio Mendes – Magalenha (Ben Tactic Jumeriah Riddim Refix)

Posted in Ben Tactic on April 14, 2010 by bentactic

This came about through Lincoln and I working on our Bubblin Vol. 1 mix that will be released later this week.  Its a pretty straight ahead dj tool/refix using the big vocal from Sergio Mendes’ classic Magalenha along with the blazing Jumeriah Riddim by Sticky.   Some Latin funky business.

Scion A/V Remix Series – Todd Edwards

Posted in Ben Tactic, Feadz, Joy Orbison, MJ Cole, My Dear Disco, Scion, Todd Edwards on April 9, 2010 by bentactic

Scion has released some pretty impressive music through their Scion A/V label (that Modeselektor remix of Ghislain Poirier is crazy).  They are back with a true legend in the house and garage game, Todd “The God” Edwards.    This release features 4 remixes of his track ‘I Might Be’ which, of course, features Todd’s signature vocal chops.   Scion went pretty big with the remixes bringing Joy Orbison, MJ Cole, Ed Banger/Institubes affiliate Feadz and My Dear Disco.

Scion is giving the release away and you can download it HERE

Norrit – Now Jack Swung EP – THINK007

Posted in Ben Tactic, Norrit, Think 2wice on March 12, 2010 by bentactic

My production/dj partner, Brent Tactic and I run a digital label called Think 2wice. One of the main reasons we started the label was because our good friend Iggy aka Norrit was sitting on a bunch of amazing songs and we wanted to help get them out there. For our seventh release Norrit is back with the Now Jack Swung EP. Its RnB inflected, sample laden dance music with a ton of soul.

On remix duty we brought in three of our favorite producers. KC ex-pat Chrissy Murderbot juked out Trippin Around in a true Southside Chicago fashion. San Francisco producer Salva, who previously released an EP with us under his Phosho moniker, went super hard with his remix of Nobody Baby. To me, it sounds like what might happen if Joker and Starkey started collaborating. 100% face melter. Rounding out the remixes is rising UK Funky star Doc Daneeka. He offered up two different versions of Nobody Baby, both with thick drums and even thicker vibes. Biggups to Doc, his new EP coming out on Ramp Recordings is bananas.

As a bonus here is 192 of Nobody Baby

You can listen to and purchase the rest of the EP from Beatport, Itunes, Junodownload and Amazon
