HxdB aka hexadecibel is a 33 year old bass music producer & DJ. In just a few fruitful years, he has ascended the ranks of Canada’s “must-hear” electronic acts and left an indelible mark on his hometown of Vancouver’s music scene, rapidly gaining the respect of some of the top taste-making DJs around the world.
2011 marks a banner year for this noise-maker, with releases slated on some of the scene’s most respected record labels, including Pinch’s Tectonic, Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood, Surefire Sound, Palms Out, Inhale, 10PIN, Frijsfo, Car Crash Set, Gradient, Aufect, Party Guy, Crude and several others. In addition to his many other previous digital releases and 3 previous 12″ releases on Surefire, Formant and Mindset, his discography seems to grow by the day, as does the international demand for his unique dance floor sound. His music has garnered DJ support from Gilles Peterson, Ben UFO, Bok Bok, Kastle, Dark Sky, Pinch, DJG, Appleblim, XI, Incyde, Salva, Distal, Submerse, Dev79, Crissy Murderbot, Sepalcure, Arkist and many, many others. HxdB’s music has also received favourable press and reviews from respected websites and publications such as XLR8R, Resident Advisor, Knowledge Magazine, DJ Mag, Little White Earbuds, Phuture Labs, Fundamental Garage, Boomkat & Juno.
Hexadecibel’s music is soulful and evocative, always sounding very lush and well-sculpted, woven with pulsating bass waves, hi-tek sounding synths, percolating effects, with a healthy sprinkling of ear candy. Using this unique soundscape as the framework, he skillfully fuses elements of house, garage, UK funky, dubstep, techno & jungle with interesting, syncopated, often times, tribal rhythms and creative arrangements. His sound typically has a dance floor sensibility, but without losing it’s meaningful qualities and falling into cliches. He deftly balances musical and electronic elements, creating rich sounding audio palettes with club-shaking bass lines.
2010 and 2011 have seen this man prove his mettle by remixing and collaborating with an exhaustive list of producers including Distal, Swarms, Resketch, Self Evident, Cairo, Cedaa, Subcorr, Ill-Esha, Vincent Parker, Longwalkshortdock, Taal Mala, Nouveau Palais, Perfect Cell, Style Disciples, Blind Prophet, Sephirot & Wachs Lyrical With the success of these, along with his dozens of other remixes and collaborations there is no question that his skills as a remixer are in hot demand. Also, together with Self Evident has recently won an illustrious remix contest for Red Bull Music Academy and Exclaim! magazine, that will net them a 12” release on Surefire Sound and $1000 in music gear.
The future for this bass architect seems to be very bright and busy, with several feature Podcasts under his belt for Fundamental Garage, Seclusiasis, Hush House, J’aime Le Dubstep, Electronic Explorations, Sonic Router, Sicknote & Kryptic Elements, not to mention his own monthly podcast “Hexadecibel Loves”, plus an increasingly in-demand DJ schedule, which includes 2 monthly events locally in Vancouver, along with serial collaborator Self Evident. He co-operates Gradient Audio along side label boss, B1t Crunch3r and has just finished compiling and curating a 19 track LP showcasing many of the leading lights in the emerging “Future Bass” scene. This is one person who has his finger placed firmly on the ever-beating pulse of electronic music and certainly one to keep your eyes open for.

Re: Ill Cosby
Ill Cosby is a Seattle-based DJ/producer and the head of the Car Crash Set record label. Since 2009, Car Crash Set has been releasing a steady stream of cutting edge bass music from both local artists and artists from around the globe. Car Crash Set has released music by Distal, C.R.S.T, Gremino, Cedaa, 214, Cardopusher, and others and has released remixes from the likes of Girl Unit, Dubbel Dutch, Jam City, Kastle, VVV, Om Unit, and more. In 2011, Car Crash Set released “No Northwest”, a compilation highlighting producers based in the Pacific Northwest. As a DJ and host of a radio show on England’s Sub.FM, Cosby brings a broad spectrum of electronic music to the function, touching on elements of dubstep, UK garage, electro, house, and beyond. Cosby is a veteran DJ who has played alongside acts such as Pearson Sound, Rusko, Ikonika, Addison Groove, Drop The Lime, Nguzunguzu, and many others.

Subsubtropical 2 is warm, expansive psychedelia for the dancefloor, heaphones, car, home, and beyond. S2 is full of luminous, up to the time tracks blended using two turntables, a mixer, and Serato in absolute mode. Novel melodic, harmonal, and rhythmic mixes abide as S2 arcs from the opening effervescent Spanish funky of Emmerson and Nehuen’s “Cocoa Rain”, through various vibrating neon house and garage styles, to loping, locomotive guarachero, to kaleidoscopic post regional rhythm explorations before landing onto a bed of fizzing, deep dubstep sounds

Huge thanks to all the Artists on this mix for their beautiful music, Ryan Organ for the dope design, Jon AD for giving me a sweet deal on CD production, and especially to everyone who takes the time to listen.

Bubblin July : DUBBEL DUTCH

Posted in Ben Tactic, Bubblin, Dubbel Dutch, Lincolnup, mix, Palms Out Sounds, Showtime! on June 22, 2010 by lincolnup

For the Fourth Edition of Bubblin we bring you:

Dubbel Dutch
(Austin, TX – Palms Out Sounds)

Dubbel Dutch’s recent release Throwback EP on Palms Out Sounds has been lighting up dancefloors worldwide and was recently featured as Sinden’s pick of the month in DJ Mag with a brilliant review:

Texas’s Dubbel Dutch had better brace himself for a big year because this release should propel this promising DJ/producer to some crazy new heights. Processing the mutant sounds of UK funky, the grey areas of future garage and house with bass, Dubbel has successfully turned them all on their head and created his own unique spin. ‘Throwback‘ is beautifully funky with its Baltimore club-style drums rolling straight from the first bar. A deep sub b-line and edited diva vocals entice before hitting you with the ultimate payoff. The flip, ‘Deep Underground‘, is more synth driven – equally futuristic and amazing. 5 Stars.Sinden

Here’s what some other folks have been saying about Throwback EP:

Bok Bok: “I can’t stop playing Deep Underground, massivest tune right now!!!

Kingdom: “The mixing and compression on Throwback are so nice. Chopped diva vocals and clean sub-bass. I love the drifting cool-down moment in this track too, and when the breakbeat kicks back in, you know you need to brace yourself for a huge drop. Love it!!

DJ Rupture: “Deep Underground combines the catchy familiarity of an instant anthem with real nice contemporary production flourishes that put it squarely in nostalgia-free 2010. Plus, good snare placement. Big tune!

Drop The Lime: “This is a gigantic release. I love the oldschool jungle vibes brought in with a dubstep slam! I will definitely drop this in sets. Really feeling “Fool In You”. HUGE one!

Julio Bashmore: “Big track, Big!

Egyptrixx: “My favorite release from Marc so far, extremely innovative. Deep underground is a total anthem.””

NGUZUNGUZU: “THANX for these bangerzzz! sooooo gooood! much love!

Ghosts on Tape: “super ill. this shit is killin it. loving the old school vibe mixed with UK funky riddims.

Dj Zhao – Ngoma 6 – Ukulwa

Posted in Kwaito, mix, South Africa on June 16, 2010 by bentactic

Berlin’s Dj Zhao has dropped the 6th chapter of his Ngoma series of mixes. All of these mixes have been excellent and exposed me to a bunch of producers I wasn’t familiar with.  All the Ngoma mixes are very heavy on the global music tip and this one really bangs with a bunch of African & South African House.
