Join us as Red Bull Music Academy & Soul’d Out Music Festival present the Bubblin 3 Year Anniversary. Since 2010, Bubblin has been one of North America’s definitive advocates for all sounds at the intersection of house, garage, techno and tropical bass. For the occasion we’re thrilled to present a line up of PDX debuts by two of the most incandescent talents to emerge in dance music in recent years: Hessle Audio Co-Boss and globally revered disk jockey Ben UFO and 100% Silk’s melodic deep house savant Octo Octa. We have also enlisted Fusebox’s glorious Funktion One rig and 3D projection mapped visuals by PDX’s Prism Labs to make sure the evening both sounds and looks beautiful.

As one of the co-founders of Hessle Audio, Ben UFO has been responsible, alongside Pearson Sound and Pangaea, for some of the most varied and ground breaking releases of recent years. Having become immersed in the still emerging dubstep scenes in London and Leeds in 2005, his musical taste was shaped primarily by the DMZ and Sub Dub nights taking place in those cities. However, as tastes have shifted and scenes have fragmented, Ben UFO’s approach to the music and to Hessle Audio itself has developed.

As BPMs have dropped and influences have broadened, so too has the vision of Ben UFO’s DJing. He remains one of the few DJs in the UK to have made an impact without a production career to fall back on, and as such his reputation is solely the result of his skill as a selector and as a mixer. As a result he remains in a position to fully explore sounds both old and new, across the worlds of house and garage, dubstep and grime, and further into the past. This level of commitment to the dance music of the last two decades has led to a collection of records which reflects the position London has long held as a city responsible for the constant development of forward thinking music.

This is not to say that his focus is primarily on the sounds of the old school, as Ben UFO is looked to as one of the leading figures supporting up and coming producers. He was the first DJ to play material by producers such as Blawan and Joy Orbison, both now scene figureheads, and his biweekly slot on London’s leading ex-pirate radio station, RinseFM, is considered to be one of the only places to hear the most exclusive new music by both new and established producers.

In addition to well received podcasts in magazines and websites as varied as Resident Advisor, XLR8R, Red Bull Music Academy and Fact Magazine, 2011 was the year that Ben UFO entered the world of commercially released mix CDs. His contribution to the respected RinseFM series was widely praised for its coherence despite the breadth of styles showcased, and he was placed #35 in a Resident Advisor readers’ poll to find the years best DJ. It’s a result which reflects Ben UFO’s ability to successfully present unfamiliar, experimental dance music to a diverse variety of audiences worldwide.

Ben UFO plays from 9PM – 11PM on RinseFM ( / 106.8FM in London) every Thursday night.

Octo Octa is Michael Bouldry-Morrison, a Brooklyn-based house music producer. Following the release of his debut EP “Let Me See You” on 100% Silk in 2011 – a release described by label head Amanda Brown (LA Vampires) as “literally one of the favorite songs ever released on either of my record labels” – he went on to produce three further releases for the label: ʻRough, Rugged, and Raw,ʼ ʻOh Love,ʼ and an eventual collaboration with Amanda Brown, the ʻLA Vampires by Octo Octaʼ release “Freedom 2K.” His singular brand of R&B-sampling deep and emotional house music has propelled him to the forefront of a scene of house-not-house producers garnering widespread critical acclaim in both traditional electronic music and indie-minded musical circles. Having recently been selected as a participant for the 2013 Red Bull Music Academy, a European tour scheduled for late 2012, and both a new EP and LP in the works, Octo Octaʼs ascent is imminent.

About Falty DL:

Welcome if you will, to the coming of age of FaltyDL, AKA Drew Lustman. A producer who’s already carved out a name as one of the most exciting talents to emerge in electronic music of late, he’s released albums on Planet Mu, supported Radiohead (and topped Thom Yorke’s office playlist,) as well as remixed the XX, Scuba and Mount Kimbie – to name but a few. He also has his own label, Blueberry Records, in collaboration with which Ninja Tune presents ‘Hardcourage.’

‘Hardcourage’ is the NYC-based Lustman’s masterpiece: an electronic opus inspired by love and crafted with renewed intent and dedication. Lustman often makes mention of attempting to channel the music in his head, to allow it to pour forth direct from his subconscious. In ‘Hardcourage’ it seems he’s succeeded. The music here feels incredibly natural, the songs taking the most perfect of shapes, their emotive rise and swell both subtle and immensely powerful.

Halfway through making the album, Lustman fell in love – the object of his affections rapidly becoming his muse. He’s been very lucky in more ways than one: ‘Hardcourage’ is full of uplift, energy and purpose – it genuinely feels like all the best parts of falling in love.

The album’s opener ‘Stay, I’m Changed’ is much more than just a track that happens to come first; it genuinely opens the album, setting the tone and enticing the listener in to the self-contained world within. From its initially tentative, horn-like synths, it gradually grows in urgency, drama and emotional depth.

Second single ‘She Sleeps’ is the only vocal track on the album, featuring a brilliant, haunting turn from The Friendly Fires’ Ed Macfarlane. The pair bonded over a shared love for garage music, (ironically, garage being the sound Falty has moved away from on the album.) The collaboration feels instinctive and inspired, two minds meeting to make a song with a purity and vulnerability not often found in electronic music.

‘Finally Some Shit/ The Rain Stopped’ feels like the blues lifting. Its pattering drums bring to mind rain against a windowpane, the driving bassline is like renewed resolve captured in music. ‘Hardcourage’ is about ‘when things are in Limbo and having the courage to carry on,’ says Lustman, and nowhere is that more in evidence than here.

The album’s first single ‘Straight and Arrow’ summarises the musical direction Lustman has taken with ‘Hardcourage.’ His move away from a US take on garage has resulted in a masterful brand of atmospheric, soul-drenched house and electronica. As you’d expect, Falty has applied as much vision to the album’s close as he has its beginning. ‘Bells’ has a strong claim to be electronica’s greatest love song. Like the clouds parting, the heart leaping, the world seeming to chime with happiness, it’s the perfect end to the perfect declaration of love.

‘I didn’t make this album with the intent of sharing all of it,’ Lustman has said. That’s obviously served him well. Luckily for us, share it he has.

RA Horizons Tour Ft. Martyn and Max Cooper 9.22.12

Posted in Ben Tactic, Bubblin, Lincolnup, Martyn, Max Cooper, Resident Advisor, Showtime! on August 23, 2012 by lincolnup

From the Resident Advisor facebook evt pg:

We are excited to announce that Resident Advisor (RA) is coming to Portland as part of its global event series: RA Horizons.

Full info & tickets:

Max Cooper
Ben Tactic

Last year RA celebrated 10 years with its X series, staging ten events in the most essential venues in many of the world’s biggest electronic music hubs (London, Berlin, New York, Tokyo, etc.). RA Horizons has a different objective. This time RA takes a journey down the road less travelled to stage a series of parties that focus on the dedicated scenes that exist outside the established global club circuit. Places with devout crowds, savvy promoters and great venues, but where you can’t just stumble out the front door and see one of your favourite DJs every weekend. The goal is to bring artists to cities they’ve never been to before, and in the process highlight exceptional clubs and promoters that are doing big things on a local level. After all, these are the people that are really fighting the odds and forging new territory.

Given the city’s unique charisma, cultural open-mindedness and enthusiasm for electronic music, Portland is a natural choice for our first US stop on the tour. Dutch bass artist and 3024 boss Martyn will headline the night at Holocene, likely weaving in and out of 4/4 rhythms as the night progresses. Joining him will be UK artist Max Cooper adding lush techno melodies to the program.

Warming up the evening’s soundtrack will be Portland’s very own Ben Tactic and Lincolnup, exactly the type of artists the series aspires to showcase – talented DJs pushing great music week in, week out.

Bubblin Presents Pezzner 8.31.12

Posted in Ben Tactic, Bubblin, Lincolnup, Pezzner, Roane, Showtime! on August 23, 2012 by lincolnup

Friday August 31 2012

Bubblin Presents

PEZZNER – Seattle / Freerange, Om, Apt

Up until 2008 Dave Pezzner was virtually unknown to the electronic dance music community, aside from his works in the duo Jacob London (Classic Music, Doubledown, U-Freqs). For 16 years he cut his chops with partner Bob Hansen, creating eccentric house and break beat rhythms often crossing the lines between bad-ass, funky and hilarious.

In the winter of 2008, Pezzner took to his own studio to begin work on his first solo output composing songs that are more serious, with an abstract artistic sensibility. Quickly Dave’s catalog began to materialize with a signature sound: Lofty percussive themes with intentions to create hypnotic soundscapes for the body as well as the brain. It wasn’t long before Pezzner found his first 5 songs scooped up by London-based Freerange Records, covering the first two EP’s of his career, “Other Lover” and the epic three-part masterpiece “Almost Here.” These two EPs garnered him massive support from artists as varied as John Digweed, Laurent Garnier, Peter Kruder, Steve Bug and Ben Watt, setting up Pezzner as a producer on the rise.

These first two releases laid a solid foundation for his career and follow-ups are now in the pipeline on Om Records, London’s Urbantorque Recordings, plus another EP for Freerange. Dave has also got an arsenal of remixes forthcoming for heavyweights including Josh Wink, Mark Farina, and Mike Monday. Its a dizzying number of releases for an emerging artist, but now that Pezzner’s stepped out on his own, he’s definitely got a lot to say.

August Bubblin : DISTAL

Posted in Ben Tactic, Bubblin, Distal, Lincolnup, Obe, Showtime! on July 16, 2010 by lincolnup

For the Fifth Edition of Bubblin we are proud to present Dirty South Bass Boss

Distal (Atlanta – Embassy/Tube10/Grizzly)

Atlanta based producer, and part-owner of EMBASSY RECORDINGS Distal has found himself rapidly building an internationally familiar brand in 2010.

Combining time travel with dance music Distal breaks down the more ambiguous sounds from the past and fuses them with thoughts and equations of the future. Because of this non-traditional approach to Dubstep, Funky and Techno, Distal has been forced to take a few risks, but along the way has created a very specific and friendly sound for himself.

Bridging the gap between techno, breakbeat hardcore, house, juke, funk, gangster rap, and even pop culture is a tricky formula to entertain. This enthusiasm has already gained the attention of many well-respected shamans and pioneers working in Dubstep and Techno today. His first two releases under Embassy graced the track listings of Joy Orbison, Appleblim, 2562, Joe Nice, Moldy, Ramadanman, BenUFO, Julio Bashmore, Breakage, and many other luminaries. The list of recognition is growing in 2010 with three stellar releases out on Rogue Dubs, Car Crash Set, and Embassy and forthcoming releases issuing on Soul Jazz Records, Grizzly, Tube10 Recordings, and Aaahh! Real Monsters.

Have a listen to Distal’s sizzling hot July 2010 Studio mix here

DJ Chi Boogie – Drop it Girl ( Juke Trax )
Dj Client – How Low Can You Go ? ( Juke Trax)

Plus Special Guest Obe (PDX – A.E.P.)

When he was a young boy, Obe was fascinated with deep, reverberating sounds. He was often found in desolate shipping yards with his head pressed against a train car, large metal pole, warehouse siding, or shipping container, turning the vibration of industry into the sounds of his dreams.
Obe has since replaced the cold steel that echoed massive resonances into his head with the nice and warm lining of deejay headphones, while still listening to similar sounds.
In the meantime he studied theoretical, cultural, technical, and political aspects of music for years and then set about traveling the world to build on this foundation of knowledge. Now Obe channels this intention and discipline into heart-felt, crowd pleasing dj sets in which he weaves uk funky, tropical house, cumbia, ghettotech, electro, baile funk, and uk garage into a compelling collage of dancefloor depth charges.

Bubblin July : DUBBEL DUTCH

Posted in Ben Tactic, Bubblin, Dubbel Dutch, Lincolnup, mix, Palms Out Sounds, Showtime! on June 22, 2010 by lincolnup

For the Fourth Edition of Bubblin we bring you:

Dubbel Dutch
(Austin, TX – Palms Out Sounds)

Dubbel Dutch’s recent release Throwback EP on Palms Out Sounds has been lighting up dancefloors worldwide and was recently featured as Sinden’s pick of the month in DJ Mag with a brilliant review:

Texas’s Dubbel Dutch had better brace himself for a big year because this release should propel this promising DJ/producer to some crazy new heights. Processing the mutant sounds of UK funky, the grey areas of future garage and house with bass, Dubbel has successfully turned them all on their head and created his own unique spin. ‘Throwback‘ is beautifully funky with its Baltimore club-style drums rolling straight from the first bar. A deep sub b-line and edited diva vocals entice before hitting you with the ultimate payoff. The flip, ‘Deep Underground‘, is more synth driven – equally futuristic and amazing. 5 Stars.Sinden

Here’s what some other folks have been saying about Throwback EP:

Bok Bok: “I can’t stop playing Deep Underground, massivest tune right now!!!

Kingdom: “The mixing and compression on Throwback are so nice. Chopped diva vocals and clean sub-bass. I love the drifting cool-down moment in this track too, and when the breakbeat kicks back in, you know you need to brace yourself for a huge drop. Love it!!

DJ Rupture: “Deep Underground combines the catchy familiarity of an instant anthem with real nice contemporary production flourishes that put it squarely in nostalgia-free 2010. Plus, good snare placement. Big tune!

Drop The Lime: “This is a gigantic release. I love the oldschool jungle vibes brought in with a dubstep slam! I will definitely drop this in sets. Really feeling “Fool In You”. HUGE one!

Julio Bashmore: “Big track, Big!

Egyptrixx: “My favorite release from Marc so far, extremely innovative. Deep underground is a total anthem.””

NGUZUNGUZU: “THANX for these bangerzzz! sooooo gooood! much love!

Ghosts on Tape: “super ill. this shit is killin it. loving the old school vibe mixed with UK funky riddims.
